ABOUT CAPT. DAVE'S DOLPHIN & WHALE SAFARI
Capt. Dave & his wife Gisele, (aka Mrs. Capt. Dave) began taking
people out to see dolphins whales in 1995.
Back then, about the only way to get out and see dolphins
or whales every day, outside of the traditional 'Whale Watching'
season (December through April) was to have a friend
with a boat take you, or to be out fishing, and then,
coincidently see the animals.
Capt. Dave & Gisele both loved seeing the Dolphins,
sometimes even more than the migrating
Gray Whales and figured if they did, then perhaps others would, too.
SO BEGAN THE JOURNEY
On a visit to Yosemite valley Capt. Dave learned of John Muir's crucial role in preserving the beautiful Yosemite,
by telling people about it and encouraging them to come and see it for themselves. Capt. Dave wanted to do the
same for the dolphins and whales off California - he often calls them a living, breathing, moving,
Yosemite. Capt. Dave often says "how can you protect something you don't even know is there?". Capt. Dave
wants you to get to know his dolphins and whales and in turn you will fall in love with them like he has.
Dave has always been very passionate about teaching people about the animals he saw. Even
other boaters were amazed when he would return to the dock
and report that he had seen huge blue whales, killer whales, humpbacks, or herds of dolphins, sometimes as large as
5,000 just three or four miles from shore.
Dave began taking a camera with him, and five years later, produced the Award Winning Film,
"Wild Dolphins and Whales of Southern California".
THE EXPERIENCE
In the meantime, Capt. Dave is constantly enhancing
the experience of seeing the animals.
He had the first "Dolphin CAM" (an underwater camera);
an incredible stereophonic research hydrophone made for him by a man from
SCRIPPS INSTITUTE and the first Dolphin & Whale Micro Museum
on board with dolphin and whale artifacts from around the world.
THE CATAMARANS
Over the years, Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari has grown some,
and now has two sailing catamarans.
Catamarans are boats that have two hulls, instead of one,
and as a result, are extremely stable.
They don't roll like a traditional boat, and they don't lean in the wind.
Both were meticulously chosen and then modified
to give the guests the chance to be extremely close to the animals.
Both have 'Eye Spy' Dolphin Nets...places where people can relax
just above the surface of the water, close enough to touch the water and feel the dolphin's breath on your
face.
THE "EYE-TO-EYE" UNDERWATER VIEWING POD
aka "THE EYE-POD" About ten years ago, Capt. Dave envisioned a place on board the boat,
where people could go and watch the dolphins play underwater...
a place where passengers would be able to become one of dolphin's pod.
The Manute'a, their newest Catamaran has the World's first
EYE-TO-EYE UNDERWATER VIEWING POD. It's received rave reviews!
A bonus has been their ability to see whales underwater from the EYE-POD, too!
AND THE BROWNIES
From the very first day, Capt. Dave has served Mrs. Capt. Dave's
triple fudge homemade brownies, but that's another story!
